If you want to win the Super Bowl, you need a Super Bowl caliber coach. If you want to win the Kentucky Derby, you need the trainer with the most Kentucky Derby wins. In an effort to finally notch that win in their belt after winning nearly everything else, Godolphin has turned to the trainer with the most Kentucky Derby wins - Bob Baffert. The horse - an unraced son of Tapit named COLISEUM.
Outside of Bob Baffert, you have to go back quite a way to find the trainer with the most wins, and unfortunately, he's no longer with us. With six wins, Ben Jones was that trainer with wins starting in 1938 and ending in 1952. After that, you have Bob Baffert with five.
COLISEUM worked four furlongs Sunday in :47 2/5 and is racing debut is scheduled for in a six-furlong race next Saturday at Del-Mar. However, Baffert believes the colt will be best on two turns. "He's a nice horse, but he's a TAPIT and has a lot of typical TAPIT issues. He can be head case. In the middle of his works, he just wants to take off. But his work (Sunday) was definitely his best so far," says Baffert. Off-shore bookmaker Bovada has the colt at 20-1 for the Derby.
In addition to this colt and one other colt Godolphin has sent to Baffert, the trainer still has his Breeders' Cup Juvenile winner GAME WINNER, as well as ROADSTER, who finished third in the Del Mar Futurity (G1). Baffert's IMPROBABLE is another prospect, who recently one the Street Sense Stakes at Churchill. Baffert says he's a "50% version of JUSTIFY.
