It was another great weekend of racing and the final one of the meet at the Spa. Here's your weekend stakes update.
Woodward Stakes (G1)
It was a field of eight in the Woodward Stakes this weekend, with MR. BUFF setting the early fractions of :23.98 and :47.97. Sitting in third, 1 1/2 lengths behind was PRESERVATIONIST biding his time through the first half-mile. The favorite, YOSHIDA sat in seventh just ahead of FOREWARNED, the 97-1 longshot.
As they turned for home, MR. BUFF bobbled and BAL HARBOUR moved up to take the lead. At the same time, PRESERVATIONIST made his move, driving aggressively down the stretch. Leading at the sixteenth pole, he crossed the wire at 1:48.11 for the 1 1/8 mile test. He was followed by BAL HARBOUR and YOSHIDA finished third a length behind PRESERVATIONIST.
While the Woodward is not a Breeders' Cup qualifying race, the Jockey Club Gold Cup is and there's a good possibility that we will see PRESERVATIONIST there next.
Glen Falls Stakes (G2T)
The $250,000 Glen Falls Stakes is a test for fillies and mares, three years old and up. At the start, LADY MONTDORE set the pace with an opening quarter of :25.13. MRS.SIPPY sat in fourth behind SANTA MONICA before leading the way to the wire. Taking an inside path, she split horses impressively to win the Glen Falls for trainer Graham Motion.
EMPRESSOF THE NILE closed with a six-wide rally to finish second just three-quarters of a length back. SANTA MONICA finished third, two and a half lengths back.
Oh, and go ahead and say her name real fast, Mrs. Sippy...clever.
Saranac Stakes (G3T)
GLOBAL ACCESS broke well and settled four wide off the rail. POWER SHOT took to the lead by three and a half lengths, running the first quarter in :24.49. The field drew together in the backstretch, as RINALDI cut off POWER PLAYER to take the lead. GOOD GOVERNANCE stayed close before coming up and challenging at the five-sixteenths pole.
At the turn for home, GOLBAL ACCESS made his move to drive home, digging in with GOOD GOVERNANCE and SEISMIC WAVE/ on the inside. GLOBAL ACCESS edged out GOOD GOVERNANCE at the wire to win with a final time of 1:41.80 in the 1 1/16 mile test on firm turf.
GOOD GOVERNANCE held on for second followed by SEISMIC WAVE.
Prioress Stakes (G2)
A quick, early pace combined with a small field, gave Chad Brown's ROYAL CHARLOTTE just what she needed to regain her winning ways. BREAK EVEN sprinted from the gates and set fast early fractions of :21.87 and :44.76. The fast space caught up with her in the final furlong though as ROYAL CHARLOTTE took control in the end and finished strong on the outside with a final time of 1:09.45 for the six furlongs. BREAK EVEN held on for second and RISKY MANDATE finished third.
Spinaway Stakes (G1)
To top off an exciting Saratoga meet, we finished it off with an exciting Spinaway Stakes featuring a field of talented two-year-old fillies on the dirt running seven furlongs. The field featured seven fillies, four of which were daughters of Spendthrift Farm's INTO MISCHIEF.
MUNDAYE CALL set the pace with fractions of :22.65 and :45.45. FRANK'S ROCKETTE settled in second right behind the pacesetter. PERFECT ALIBI sat in fifth after the opening half-mile waiting on her time to strike.
At the top of the backstretch, FRANK'S ROCKETTE put away MUNDAYE CALL while PERFECT ALIBI skimmed the rail. The two Adirondack Stakes rivals were back at it in a battle to the finish.
While FRANK'S ROCKETTE led by a half-length at the eighth pole, PERFECT ALIBI battled it out to daw away at the sixteenth pole and finished the seven furlongs in first with a time of 1:23.44. FRANK'S ROCKETTE finished second with FIGURE OF SPEECH following in third.
Have a great week!
