Saturday night and you're just hanging around with your friends, waiting for the Canelo Alvarez versus Sergey Kovalev fight or the much-anticipated Jorge Masvidal versus Nate Diaz UFC 224 headliner. (Really wanted to watch the Masvidal v. Diaz matchup, apex predator versus apex predator – sorry Randy Orton – but a schedule conflict is in the way.)
The Breeders' Cup is on the 60inch and a few of the party attendees have some money on the races, playing Guaranteed Tips Sheets, of course. One of their plays just came home and they are high fiving, all amped up like one of those casino commercials on TV.
Eager to join in, you open your preferred horse racing wagering app on your iPhone. The Breeders' Cup Classic is 15 minutes to post, the money pools are huge; so, you rush to deposit $20 to place a few bets, maybe some win bets, exacta, trifecta and if any money is left over a superfecta.
McKinzie at Santa Anita
After reviewing past performances, you see MCKINZIE has been dominant at Santa Anita with three wins and four seconds in seven starts. His morning line odds are only 3-1 despite the strong Santa Anita record. A $2 win bet on the Bob Baffert trainee starts the betting log.
In addition to one of the top horses according to race time odds, you want to throw a few bucks on a long shot. OWENDALE has run a couple of triple-digit speed figures since returning to the track following a two-month rest. Trainer Brad Cox wins third starts at 27% and OWENDALE sits at 15-1; $2 to win on OWENDALE.
Four bucks out of pocket leaves $16. On to exactas…
After putting your nose in past performances, VINO ROSSO and CODE OF HONOR look like they are MCKINZIE's biggest competition. You decide to do a $1 exacta box with VINO ROSSO, CODE OF HONOR and MCKINZIE for $6. Ten dollars left to for a trifecta and a super if anything is left over.
Guaranteed Tip Sheet's 2019 Breeders' Cup Picks: The Profile of a Breeders' Cup Classic Champion says no post-time favorite has won the last four Breeders' Cup Classics at Santa Anita. CODE OF HONOR looks like he is going to be the fav… hmmm.
Elate
With that in mind, MCKINZIE and VINO ROSSO are the choices for the top of the ticket. The duo is paired with OWENDALE and CODE OF HONOR for place (second), and the lady, ELATE, looks too good on paper to overlook. The top four and ELATE are put at the bottom of the $0.50 trifecta, a $9.00 investment.
Nineteen of the $20 bucks gone. That leaves $1 for a $0.10 superfecta, time to get creative.
Superfectas are long shots to hit anyway, might as well swing for the fences and see if we can hit one out of the yard.
OWENDALE and ELATE are your two favorite longer shots, the top of the superfecta starts with those two. MCKINZIE hasn't missed at Santa Anita so you single him up in second as the backdoor play. For third, MONGOLIAN GROOM, who beat MCKINZIE in his last start, is combined with OWENDALE and ELATE. To close the superfecta out, you flip a coin between CODE OF HONOR (heads) and VINO ROSSO (tails). Tails it is, which is OK as VINO ROSSO topped CODE OF HONOR in their last race but was disqualified into second. Revenge in the Breeders' Cup Classic will be sweetest. VINO ROSSO, MONGOLIAN GROOM, OWENDALE and ELATE are the choices for fourth place.
That's $0.80, leaving $0.20 in your account.
The horses are loading into the gate for the Breeders' Cup Classic as you press enter to submit your final bet. Over the TV, you hear track announcer Trevor Denman's, “and they are off in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Classic…”
Good luck at the races!
