We're 8 days from Breeders' Cup weekend! Here's your weekly news wrap up of the horse racing world.
Breeders' Cup Follows Suit on Santa Anita Rules Regarding Hollendorfer
In his ongoing battle with The Stronach Group, Jerry Hollendorfer will not be allowed entries in the Breeders' Cup. Since the Breeders' Cup operates the host track during the event, they have the final say on which trainers can participate. They elected to follow the rules set by Santa Anita and had no other comment beyond their statement not permitting him to participate. Hollendorfer has been battling with the tracks owned by The Stronach Group in California for the last year following the slew of horses that died on the track, four of which were Hollendorfer trainees.
However, the two horses that were trained by the Hall of Fame trainer will not be kept from racing and will instead run under assistant trainer Dan Ward. VASILIKA is pre-entered for the Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) shows a change of ownership with Janet Hollendorfer now listed as a partner on the mare. DANUSKA'S MY GIRL is pre-entered for the Filly & Mare Sprint (G1). Both horses have Dan Ward listed as trainer.
188 Horses Pre-Entered for 2019 Breeders' Cup
The full list of pre-entries for the 2019 Breeders' Cup is now available. The Classic is looking to be a showdown between MCKINZIE and CODE OF HONOR. MIDNIGHT BISOU is undefeated this year and is making a case for Horse of the Year, as is her male counterpart BRICKS AND MORTAR.
The Breeders' Cup will host 47 horses from overseas with Aidan O'Brien bringing 17 horses and Coolmore and partnerships entering 18. Fifty horses are pre-entered as “Win and You're In” qualifiers.
TVG will provide exclusive coverage and special programming leading up to the Breeders' Cup. They will also broadcast the BC Post Position Draw, which will be Monday, October 18th at 6:30pm. They will have daily on-sight coverage at Santa Anita including Breakfast at the Breeders' Cup each morning from 10am to 1:30pm ET.
The NBC Sports Network will broadcast Breeder's Cup Future Stars Friday from 4 to 8pm ET and Breeders' Cup Championship Saturday from 3:30 to 8pm ET. Breeders' Cup Classic Hour will be broadcast by NBC.
Live streaming of the events will also take place on the Breeders' Cup Facebook and YouTube accounts, as well as their mobile app and at BreedersCup.com.
Game Winner to Race as a 4-Year-Old
GAME WINNER'S three-year-old season was a frustrating campaign with multiple setbacks, but owner Gary West said that while a stallion deal is in the works, the colt will return in 2020 under trainer Bob Baffert. The colt has not raced since July 13th when he won the Los Alamitos Derby. While there is no specific timetable for his return, he will most likely make his four-year-old debut in the spring.
Louisiana Trainer Justin Jeansonne Celebrates 100th Win at Delta Downs
Trainer Justin Jeansonne celebrated his 100th win and his first win of the Delta Downs meet last night in Vinton, Louisiana with 2017 gelding DW STRONG by WICKED STRONG. Justin has enjoyed several successes this year including TIZFRANDERELLA taking the La Senorita Stakes at Retama and FIRST U MAKE AROUX'S win in the Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes.
After a bumpy start, the field of six broke from the gates at Delta Downs in the sixth race last night. DW STRONG came out clean and strong on the rail with SAILING JETT rushing up to take the lead and set the pace. Running strong fractions of :24.41 and :49.77. FLY GUY RAK settled behind the pacesetter with DW STRONG sitting in third on the rail. In the backstretch, SAILING JETT tried to maintain the lead, but DW STRONG moved up to second overcoming FLY GUY RAK. Around the turn and with a furlong to go, DW STRONG charged to the lead and drew clear at the sixteenth pole to take the win with a final time of 1:29.50 in the seven-furlong race. SAILING JETT finished second followed by KING KIP in third.
Have a great week!
