It was an exciting weekend as Kentucky Derby and Oaks hopefuls took to the tracks. Here's your weekend stakes update.
$100,500 Sham Stakes (G3)
The 8-5 favorite, AUTHENTIC broke well and went to the lead. Stablemate AZUL COAST settled in last behind the pack. AUTHENTIC ran one and a half lengths ahead of UNCAPTURED HERO through the first half mile and set quick fractions of :23.87 and :47.94. At the three quarter mile mark, AZUL COAST made up ground to challenge the leader but couldn't overcome. AUTHENTIC crossed the wire ahead by 7 3/4 lengths despite spooking twice on the homestretch. AZUL COAST finished second followed by ZIMBA WARRIOR.
The 3 year old INTO MISCHIEF colt earned 10 points towards the Kentucky Derby.
$200,500 Santa Ynez Stakes (G2)
GOLDEN PRINCIPAL broke first with AUBERGE moving up the inside to take the lead by a head. BAST broke from the outside and ran a length back in third. AUBERGE set fast fractions of :22.02 and :44.59. BAST moved three wide on the outside at the turn for home. Finding her stride down the lane, she took the win with a final time of 1:23.42 and earning 10 points towards the Kentucky Oaks. AUBERGE held on for second followed by GOLDEN PRINCIPAL.
$201,000 San Gabriel Stakes (G2)
OVERDUE went to the front to set of fractions of :24.26 and :48.18. DESERT STONE broke inward and was last in the pack. Saving ground on the turns, DESERT STONE angled out at the top of the stretch behind CLEOPATRA'S STRIKE and inched past her for the victory. MAJESTIC EAGLE finished third one and a half lengths back.
$100,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes
At Gulfstream, CHANCE IT ran for the first time with out of state company. Finding a narrow opening on the rail, the colt battled for the lead at the top of the stretch. He edged by AS SEEN ON TV in an exciting battle to the wire. The stewards reviewed the race for a foul claim by Kelly Breen, the trainer of AS SEEN ON TV, but CHANCE IT prevailed. SOLE VOLANTE finished third.
