It was Queen's Plate weekend and the start to the Canadian Triple Crown this weekend at Woodbine, here's a recap of the results.
Queen's Plate Stakes - $1,007,200 CAD
Out of the gates, it was ONE BAD BOY who went to the lead and never looked back. Setting fractions of :24.42, :49.52, 1:14.18 and 1:37.83, the three-year-old ridgling wasn't deterred by the distance at all and fended off a late challenge by AVIE'S FLATTER, taking the win by 3 1/2 lengths.
SKYWIRE, the 2-1 favorite, had a rough start, not getting out quickly from post 10. TONE BROKE also complicated matters by inwards toward SKYWIRE. The stewards posted an inquiry, but the left the result of the race unchanged.
AVIE'S FLATTER put in a good trip, but just couldn't get out from behind ONE BAD BOY, running second the entire race. TONE BROKE finished third.
This was the first start for ONE BAD BOY in Canada, shipping in from California. He came off a second place finish in the Alcatraz Stakes at Golden Gate Fields. For jockey Flavien Prat, the win was just as exciting as it was for the horse's connections. Flavien became the first jockey to win both the Kentucky Derby and the Queen's Plate since Kent Desormeaux on REAL QUITE in 1998 and ARCHERS BAY.
The $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes (1 3/16th miles) is the next leg of the Canadian Triple Crown and will take place July 23rd at Fort Erie, followed by the $400,000 Breeders' Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on August 17th at E.P. Taylor. For the horse that takes the crown, OLG is sponsoring a new $500,000 bonus. The last horse to win the series was WANDO in 2003.
Charlie Barley Stakes - $100,000 CAD
In the 1-mile test on the turf, INVENTING BLAME went to the front on the outside. THE BLACK ALBUM sat third behind MO SPEED. GLOBAL ACCESS gained speed steadily moving from fifth place forward. INVENTING BLAME held the lead around the outside turn when THE BLACK ALBUM began making his move for the lead and battled INVENTING BLAME stride for stride to the wire, edging INVENTING BLAME out with GLOBAL ACCESS rallied hard as well taking third just a neck behind.
Zadracarta Stakes - $100,000 CAD
DESERT ISLE broke from the eight post but was stuck in traffic behind CHINA RIDER and SILENT SONET. The pacesetters set opening fractions of :23.17 and :45.58. The field was tightly bunched into the far turn, but at the top of the stretch SILENT SONET stretched her legs and began to open up giving DESERT ISLE the chance to rally from the middle of the lane. MISS SEA challenged DESERT ISLE, but couldn't keep up as DESERT ISLE took the win in the 7-furlong sprint with a final time of 1:21.28.
MISS SEA finished second, three-quarters of a length ahead of ZESTINA.
King Edward Stakes (G2) - $175,000 CAD
The field of eight broke perfectly with MR RITZ setting the pace followed by CURLIN'S HONOR and SAVAGE BATTLE. The first quarter went in :23.65 with EMMAUS and ROSE'S VISION battling for third. Tope of the home stretch, MR RITZ and CURLIN'S HONOR battled to the wire but, CURLIN'S HONOR wavered on the homestretch as he switched leads and lost some pace. But it was SYNCHRONY coming from last to first at the wire! CURLIN'S HONOR finished second with SAY THE WORD taking third.
Dance Smartly Stakes (G2) - $175,000 CAD
ROCK MY LOVE broke out to the right but managed to go to the front and take a three-length advantage. HOLY HELENA followed and ART OF ALMOST followed about a length behind. ROCK MY LOVE led by four lengths with HOLY HELENA behind. GET EXPLICIT rushed up to the outside after the half-mile mark closing the gap behind ROCK MY LOVE. Continuing to challenge around the turn, ROCK MY LOVE still led but several rallied to challenge. HOLY HELENA gradually took the lead with STARSHIP JUBILEE managed to move into second with ART OF ALMOST moving up to third.
Highlander Stakes (G1) - $300,000 CAD
With a clean break, YORKTON went to the lead with SOUPER SMART and EXTRAVAGANT KID following together in second running stride for stride. Down the lane, YORKTON was in front, but CARIBOU KID and SOUPER SMART began to rally on the outside. EXTRAVAGANT KID took the lead, but WET YOUR WHISTLE raced past the entire field on the outside to take the win!
EXTRAVAGANT KID managed to hold on for second with WHITE FLAG coming in third.
Have a great week!
