Amidst controversy, Gulfstream Park was still able to run the Florida Derby this weekend and their other stakes races on the card. Here's your weekend stakes update!
$750,000 Florida Derby (G1)
TIZ THE LAW settled on the outside, stalking the pace. SHIVAREE set the pace and held his position as they came around the turn. TIZ THE LAW moved ahead of the pack with SHIVAREE fighting to stay ahead of ETE INDIAN and GOUVERNEUR MORRIS. TIZ THE LAW pulled ahead by four and a half lengths to take the win. SHIVAREE held on for second over ETE INDIAN.
TIZ THE LAW now has 122 points on the Road to the Kentucky Derby, which is usually just five weeks away, but not this year. SHIVAREE's second-place finish came with 80-1 odds and ETE INDIAN has hit the board in all three of the Gulfstream Kentucky Derby prep races.
$100,000 Appleton Stakes (G3T)
The break was chaotic with several trying to reach the front for the early lead. DR. EDGAR cut between horses and shifted to the rail to get the lead in the first quarter running :23.55. MARAUD pressed on the outside and EL TORMENTA pressed from behind. Shifting up on the far outside EL TORMENTA took over the lead for a :46.37 half mile. As the field turned home, MARAUD pushed out to the lead and SOMBEYAY made his own move at the top of the stretch, taking the lead by a head before being outrun deep in the stretch. It was a photo finish for the win with SOCIAL PARANOIA picking it up, followed by SOMBEYAY in second and MARCH TO ARCH in third.
$200,000 Pan American Stakes (G2T)
SPOOKY CHANNEL set the pace with fractions of :24.09 and :48.56. BEMMA'S BOY broke from the second post and took a ground-saving run around the race's three turns. Stablemate ZULU ALPHA followed, stuck in the third and fourth path. In the midstretch BEMMA'S BOY angled out with plenty of gas left and outran ZULU ALPHA who had just been asked to make his half-mile rally before the final turn. BEMMA'S BOY at 9-1 took the win, followed by ZULU ALPHA and CURRENT.
$100,000 Orchid Stakes (G3T)
Breaking well, MEAN MARY sprinted to the lead and set the pace with fractions of :25.41 and :48.88. BEAU BELLE and GENTLE RULER followed closely, dueling for second and third. At the mile, MEAN MARY picked up the pace and opened her to lead to one and a half lengths as they turned into the stretch. GENTLE RULER moved up into the two path, but didn't have time to fight for the lead, instead settling for second, three and three-quarters lengths ahead of ELIZABETH WAY.
$200,000 Gulfstream Oaks (G2)
SWISS SKYDIVER went to the early lead and cruised along with fractions of :49.12 and 1:13.30. At the quarter pole, LUCREZIA made a move for the frontrunner but was fended off. SWISS SKYDIVER drew away for the win and earned herself a spot in the Kentucky Oaks, five months from now. LUCREZIA took second by a nose over LAKE AVENUE.
$75,000 Sir Shackleton Stakes
YORKTON went to the lead and set fractions of :22.52 and :45, chased by HE HATE ME. VEKOMA moved from fourth on the turn and then powered down the center of the stretch as they left the turn. YORKTON held on for second followed by HE HATE ME.
Stay healthy and have a good week!
