While your newsfeed is likely full of updates on the latest Breeder's Cup contenders, some familiar names made headlines this weekend. Here's your weekend stakes wrap-up.
$200,000 Bold Ruler Handicap (G3) at Belmont Park
MAXIMUM SECURITY broke quickly and angled to the two path. He posted opening fractions of :22.90 and :45.22. Pressing, TRUE TIMBER tried to keep up with the pace but could not. At the eighth pole, MAXIMUM SECURITY was two lengths ahead of the field and was unchallenged in the stretch. The 23-1 longshot TALE OF SILENCE rallied on the rail and finished second. TRUE TIMBER finished third, two and a half lengths back.
To say that Jason Servis was happy would be an understatement. His emotions overwhelmed him during the television interview. While many online were quick to say that the colt wasn't running against any true contenders, the fact of the matter remained that the three-year-old was the youngest in the field and carrying the most weight at 121 pounds. He covered the seven furlongs in a fast 1:20.76. The track record is 1:19.96. He has also had a rough three-year-old season after being DQ'd in the Kentucky Derby, not performing well in the Haskell due to the heat, missing the Travers and then suffering severe colic. As Servis put in his interview, "He's a special horse."
$200,000 Hagyard Fayette Stakes (G2) at Keeneland
TOM'S D'ETAT came in as the 3-2 favorite for the Fayette. He settled behind MR FREEZE, who posted fractions of :23.53 and :47.8, following the pacesetter by a length. At the three quarter pole, he was eating up the track and overcoming MR FREEZE by a head. Opening up, he ran to victory with a 4 1/4 length score and finished the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.17. MR FREEZE held on for second and BAL HARBOUR finished third, 3 1/4 lengths back.
$120,000 Street Sense Stakes at Churchill Downs
SILVER PROSPECTOR set the pace, challenged by longshot CARPE VICTORIAM on the outside. They ran a :22.87 quarter-mile and a :46.24 half. SOUTH BEND bided his time in the pack along the rail. Around the turn, he had nowhere to go, but was able to split horses in the stretch and rallied for the win. FIGHTING SEABEE finished second with SILVER PROSPECTOR finishing third.
Trainer Stanley Hough says that a Derby prep race is the next logical step. The colt holds a perfect 3-3 record.
$120,000 Rags to Riches Stakes at Churchill Downs
SPECIALLY set the pace running a quick opening half-mile in :45.72. FINITE drew even on the turn and edged clear, drawing off down the stretch. The filly ran strong down the lane to win by a six-length margin and completed the one-mile trip in 1:35.53, beating the track record of champion MONOMOY GIRL, set in 2017. LONGSHOT GLAMOUR finished second and GONE GLIMMERING came in third. SPECIALLY lost her steam and finished last, beaten by 21 1/2 lengths.
Have a great week!
