We're in full swing now for the Win and You're In Series for the Breeders' Cup and several horses have solidified their tickets to Santa Anita in November. Here's a wrap-up of this weekend's stakes winners.
The Arlington Million
The headliner of the weekend was the Arlington Million at Arlington International Racecourse. All eyes were on BRICKS AND MORTAR this weekend, particularly the new Japanese owners of his breeding rights, Shadai Farm.
BANDUA, winner of the Arlington Handicap in July, tried to lead everys tep, but BRICKS AND MORTAR responded powerfully mid-stretch and overcame the leader to win the 1 1/4 miles in 1:59.44 over a firm course.
MAGIC WAND was also able to over BANDUA to take second to BRICKS AND MORTAR again after placing behind him in the Pegasus World Cup Turf Invitational. BANDUA held on to the third spot.
The next stop for BRICKS AND MORTAR is the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita November 2nd.
$600,000 Beverly D. Stakes (G1T)
SISTERCHARLIE, another Chad Brown trainee, lagged behind the pace setter THAIS, also trained by Brown. THAIS set a quick pace over the very firm turf course going six furlongs in 1:09.66 and a mile in 1:34.55.
At the stretch SISTERCHARLIE sprinted by the front runners quickly putting them behind and taking the win by three lengths. AWESOMETANK, one of the two foreign contenders, finished second with Brown's third starter, COMPETITIONOFIDEAS finishing third.
This was the second win in the Beverly D. for SISTERCHARLIE and solidified her trip to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Owner Brant said he would like to see her run against ENABLE, but doesn't want to take her overseas, so the face off would have to take place at the Breeders' Cup.
$500,000 Fourstardave Handicap (G1)
GIDU set the pace with fast quarter-mile fractions of :22.65 and :44.61. GOT STORMY chased from mid-pack but rallied hard at the turn for home and set a new track record of 1:32 for the mile race. She was also the first female winner of the Fourstardave Handicap and won an automatic berth into the TVG Breeders' Cup Mile at Santa Anita.
RAGING BULL finished second by 2 1/2 lengths and the 9-5 favorite, UNI, finished third a head back.
$101,404 Rancho Bernardo Handicap (G3)
The Jerry Hollendorfer trained, DANUSKA'S MY GIRL, went wire to wire in the Rancho Bernardo Handicap at Del Mar. Hollendorfer was able to return to Del Mar after a San Diego County judicial officer allowed him an injunction. Hollendorfer expected that BEST OF ME would give them a challenge, but DANUSKA'S MY GIRL broke so well, that the rest of the field was left behind. BEST OF ME finished second a half-length back and ANONYMITY finished third after stumbled out of the gates.
$131,500 CAD Seagram Cup Stakes (G3)
Going into the test, MR HAVERCAMP was heavily favored, but MR RITZ gained a three length lead in the backstretch. After the quarter mile, he was five lengths ahead and posted a :48.57 half-mile. MR HAVERCAMP still gave chase and worked to close the gap around the turn. The longshot THOR'S ROCKET took over and MR HAVERCAMP faded. MR RITZ completed the distance in 1:42.75 with a 1 1/4 length lead.
THOR'S ROCKET at 66-1 finished second and SPECIAL FORCES rallied from the back to finish third, a head in front of MR HAVERCAMP.
$200,000 Longacres Mile (G3)
ANYPORTINASTORM led the pack setting fractions of :23.05 and 1:09.37 through six furlongs. LAW ABIDIN CITIZEN moved up to second at the turn and gained momentum as the head down the stretch. The colt had just enough in him to get the win by a head at the wire with a final time of 1:34.08. ANYPORTINASTORM held on for second place followed by RESTRAINEDVENGENCE finished third.
Have a great week!
