Things are starting to heat up on the Road to the Kentucky Derby and the two-year-olds are really starting to take off as they gear up for the spring. Here's your weekend stakes update!
$400,000 Springboard Mile Stakes at Remington Park
With a clean break for all, the field of five ran like a wall down the track vying to take the lead and set the pace. ROWDY YATES got to the front with ALTERNATE TIME and MAXIMILIANO pressing. He posted fractions of :23.49 and :47.75.
At the turn for home, the field started to make their moves with ANSWER IN and SHOPLIFTED inching closer to the lead. EMBOLDEN overcame to get to the front at the top of the stretch traveling on the far outside.SHOPLIFTED closed the distance and ran the leader down while ANSWER IN looked for running room at the rail. The trio raced head to head with SHOPLIFTED holding off ANSWER IN by head. EMBOLDEN finished third, a half length back. The final time as 1:37.95.
SHOPLIFTED picked up 10 points to the 2020 Kentucky Derby.
$100,000 King Glorious Stakes - Los Alamitos
The field of five broke cleanly with TAP BACK going to the front to set the pace with fractions of :22.96 and :46. Stalking the pace, CLUB ASPEN overtook the favorite TAP BACK deep in the stretch to pull out the win over the favorite. PAPSTER held on for third.
$500,000 New York Stallion Series' Fifth Avenue - Aqueduct
TIME LIMIT set the pace for the field of eleven with fractions of :23.08 and :46.37 on a muddy, but sealed track. A FREUD OF MAMA rated midpack. At the stretch, A FREUD OF MAMA tipped out four wide and ran down a lagging TIME LIMIT to take the win in the seven furlong race. The final time was 1:25.81. OFFICER HUTCHY held on for second with TIME LIMIT dropping back to third. A FREUD OF MAMA came away victorious as the 23-1 longshot, earning her first stakes win her first time on the dirt with kickback.
