Here's the latest news from horse racing this week.
Gulfstream Park Controversy
Broward County has issued a ban on non-essential business due to the coronavirus pandemic, but Gulfstream plans to race Saturday and host the Florida Derby (G1). The vice mayor of Hallandale Beach stated, "They need to stop the racing. We can't just bend to their will just because they say they're going to sue us or whatever legal action. They're a powerful entity, but we can't just allow that to go on. They're blatantly violating the Broward County order."
Gulfstream has been racing without spectators and closed the casino. They also closed the restaurants prior to the county mandate. Races have continued with only essential staff. The Gulfstream meet concludes Sunday and the new season is set to open April 3rd.
Turfway Park Suspends Racing
In accordance with the Kentucky Governor's executive order, Turfway Park cut its meet short, but only the final three racing dates were lost as the current meet was to end March 29th. The backside is remaining open for training.
Tracks Still Operating through the Pandemic
The following racetracks are still in operation without spectators:
Woodbine is postponing the start of their Thoroughbred season until further notice. Lone Star Park in Texas has delayed the stable area opening until after April 3rd. Their Thoroughbred season is set to start April 16, 2020.
Two Top Races Rescheduled
Navarro and Service Arraignments Adjourned
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the massive spread of the disease through New York City, the arraignments of trainers Jorge Navarro and Jason Servis that was scheduled for March 23rd has been adjourned. No new date was set. They are among 19 defendants stemming from the March 9th indictments on conspiracy to manufacture, distribute and administer adulterated or misbranded drugs that were administered to racehorses.
