While things have been a little slow on the stakes scene since the Breeders' Cup. There was some action this weekend at Del Mar as they finished up their Bing Crosby meet.
$300,000 Matriarch Stakes (G3) at Del Mar
GOT STORMY settled in sixth for the one mile turf race for fillies and mares. PAINTING CORNERS went to the front to set the pace, followed by STORM THE HILL and GIZA GODDESS. Through the far turn, GOT STORMY moved up on the outside, then charged down the stretch passing JULIET FOXTROT and finishing a length ahead of the late-running DADDY IS A LEGEND. JULIET FOXTROT finished third.
This was the second Grade 1 win for GOT STORMY and her fourth win out of eight starts.
$200,000 Hollywood Turf Cup (G2) at Del Mar
UNITED and OSCAR DOMINGUEZ settled in ninth and tenth respectively through the first mile. ZESTFUL set the pace with fractions :23.68 and :48.65. As the field came to the far turn for the second time, CHOSEN VESSEL and OVERDUE flew by the pacesetter while OSCAR DOMINGUEZ moved up into the center of the track. UNITED came up on the far outside. CELEOPATRA'S STRIKE veered out and ahead of the pair causing OSCAR DOMINGUEZ to come close to bumping UNITED. Overcoming that bobble, OSCAR DOMINGUEZ gathered himself and powered for home taking the win over UNITED by a neck and WARD ‘N JERRY in third.
The Hollywood Turf Cup is the first graded win for OSCAR DOMINGUEZ, who was a $40,000 claim for owner Richard Baltas.
$201,404 Seabiscuit Handicap (G2T) at Del Mar
It was a clean break for the entire field of the Seabiscuit. MAJESTIC EAGLE went to the front to set the pace with fractions of :23.51 and :47.96. SACRED LIFE sat third back and NEXT SHARES settled midpack. MAJESTIC EAGLE led by a length and a half along the backstretch. SACRED LIFE was locked in with nowhere to go. OM kicked on but NEXT SHARES came up to take the lead. SACRED LIFE came from nowhere to challenge but couldn't make it to the wire in time. RIVER BOYNE held on for third.
This win broke a streak of six unplaced finishes for the six-year-old gelding who started with odds of 27-1 in the 1 1/16 mile race.
$300,000 Hollywood Derby (G1T) at Del Mar
NEPTUNE'S STORM went to the lead to set the pace while MO FORZA got bumped a bit between horses at the break and settled in third. NEPTUNE'S STORM set the pace with fractions of :23.90, :48.22 and 1:12.44. MO FORZA held on until the pacesetter tired when he edged ahead and took the win by three-quarters of a length. The win gave the colt his first G1victory.
