SISTERCHARLIE (IRE) will look to defend her crown in the 2019 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf. She'll take on 12 other lady horses, racing 1 1/4 miles on Santa Anita's turf course. After her 2018 victory, leading, money winning trainer Chad Brown said, "She knows where the wire is."
She sure does, SISTERCHARLIE has won six in a row and three since winning last year's Breeders' Cup FILLY & MARE TURF. MyBookie.AG lists Brown's trainee as the 9/5 morning line favorite.
Once again, Guaranteed Tip Sheet analyzed previous Santa Anita, Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf champions to build the profile of a winner. Here's what it takes to win the Filly & Mare Turf in Arcadia, California.
The Favs are OK to Play: Santa Anita has hosted seven, Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf races. Only two of the seven at Santa Anita missed the board. Meanwhile, two of the seven winners left the gate as the post-time favorites. DANK (GB) did it in and paid $5 in 2013. ISLINGTON (IRE) was the $7.80 winner and chalk in 2003. LADY ELI finished with show money in 2016, THE FUGUE and FOREVER TOGETHER finished third in 2012 and 2009, respectively.
European be Winnin': Five of the seven Santa Anita, Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf victors were from the other side of the Atlantic. Three from Great Britain (QUEEN'S TRUST (GB) – 2016, DANK (GB) 2013, and MIDDAY (GB) 2009). France's ZAGORA in 2012 and the Irish ISLINGTON in 2003.
In fact, the last three Filly & Mare Turf crowns are worn by European horses and 13 of the 20 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf winners are from overseas.
Off the Pace Usually Wins the Race: Five of the seven Santa Anita winners ran fifth or higher at the 1/4 pole call. Three ran fifth, one seventh and one ninth. DAYATTHESPA is the only to wire the field in 2014 and DANK third in 2013.
Most of the FILLY & MARE TURF titleholders made their move after Santa Anita's mile marker. Only two ran first or second after one mile, but five of the seven were first (2x) or second (3x) in the stretch. The other two were sixth and eighth in the stretch before making a late power move.
Inside four for the Score: Five of the seven winners left from the inside four gates with posts one, two and three hitting the tape once and fourth twice. Meanwhile, sixth and eleventh got one of the other two Ws.
The Profile of a Santa Anita, Breeders' Filly & Mare Turf Winner: The 2019 champ will probably draw one of the four inside posts, be a European horse with a strong, late push. The favorite is a strong candidate for the win and needs to be included in exotic tickets.
